How Bazi Works
Bazi maps a person's birth year, month, day, and hour into eight characters made up of Heavenly Stems (天干) and Earthly Branches (地支). These are translated into the Five Elements. The reading focuses on how these elements interact — which ones are strong, which are weak, which support the Day Master, and which create tension.
Bazi is especially good at showing elemental balance, life rhythm, and timing. It works well for questions about career direction, financial cycles, relationship dynamics, and personal timing.
How Zi Wei Dou Shu Works
Zi Wei Dou Shu takes the same birth data and maps it into a chart of twelve palaces, each governing a different life area — such as career, wealth, relationships, health, property, and inner life. The system places over a dozen major stars into these palaces, each star carrying its own personality and tendencies.
Where Bazi speaks in the language of elements, Zi Wei Dou Shu speaks in the language of stars and palaces. This can make it feel more descriptive and immediate.
The Real Difference
Neither system is more accurate than the other. They simply organise information differently. Bazi tends to emphasise flow, timing, and elemental interaction. Zi Wei Dou Shu tends to emphasise character, life structure, and the placement of specific qualities in specific areas.
Some practitioners use both, pulling strategic timing from Bazi and descriptive detail from Zi Wei Dou Shu.
How to Use This in Practice
If someone has only explored one system, trying the other can offer a useful second perspective. Bazi might confirm a timing pattern that Zi Wei Dou Shu frames differently, or Zi Wei might describe a personality dynamic that Bazi only hints at through elemental balance.
The goal is not to collect more charts. It is to find the framework that helps a person think more clearly about their actual life.
