Bazi (八字, “eight characters”), also called Four Pillars of Destiny, is a classical Chinese system for reading a person's character and life timing from the moment of birth. Your birth year, month, day and hour are each written as a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, which gives eight characters in total.
How a Bazi chart is built
The Day Master (日主), the stem of your Day pillar, is the centre of the chart. The other seven characters, along with the hidden stems inside each branch, show which elements support or challenge it. From there the chart maps out the Ten Gods, plus a sequence of ten-year luck pillars that adds timing.
Why birth time and place matter
Bazi follows the solar calendar, not the clock on the wall. Your birthplace lets us correct your clock time to true solar time, which can move you into a different hour pillar, and occasionally a different day pillar. If you don't know your birth hour you still get the three pillars we can calculate, with the Hour pillar left out.
What to do with your chart
A chart is a map of tendencies, not a fixed fate. Use it to understand your strengths, your timing and the trade-offs in front of you, then weigh what you see against your own judgment.
